Discord character limits

Discord caps a standard message at 2,000 characters, while Nitro subscribers can send up to 4,000. This tool counts against the 2,000-character default so your message sends in one piece — go over and Discord blocks it until you trim or split it.

Messages, embeds, and bots

The 2,000-character cap covers normal chat messages. Embeds (used by bots and webhooks) have their own separate limits: an embed description allows up to 4,096 characters, a title 256, and the combined embed content is capped at 6,000. If you write bot responses or announcements, keep these in mind — this counter helps with the message body that most people hit first.

Working around the limit

If your message runs over 2,000 characters, split it at a natural break into two messages, post it as a file or text snippet, or move long content into an embed if you’re using a bot. Markdown, custom emoji shortcodes (like :smile:), and links all count toward the limit, so a message that looks short can run long.
