Reading time depends on two things: the number of words and the reading speed. Most adults read silently at about 238 words per minute, so a 1,000-word article takes roughly four minutes to read. Reading aloud is slower — a comfortable speaking pace is around 130 words per minute, so the same 1,000 words take closer to eight minutes to say out loud.
